Departing councillors come from both Croydon's ruling Conservative group and the Labour opposition as 18 out of the 70 council seats are certain to see a new representative. These include the Conservatives' Maria Gatland who serves as the Cabinet Member for Children and Young People. ‌Labour will also lose leading figures like Carlton Young OBE, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Cabinet Member for Finance. May's elections mark the first electoral test for Mayor Perry and his Conservative administration, with residents deciding whether to continue on the current course or hand control to one of the borough's opposition parties.
