Tangier is the most expensive city to live in in all of North Africa, according to the 2026 cost-of-living rankings just published by Numbeo, the world’s largest, user-contributed database for comparing the cost of living, housing prices, crime rates, pollution, and the quality of life across thousands of cities. Tangier came in at the top of the North Africa regional list with a Cost of Living Index of 36.1, ahead of Casablanca (35.2), Rabat (34.4), and Marrakech (32.7). Numbeo’s index compares everyday expenses, such as groceries, dining, transportation, and utilities, using New York City as the baseline (100). While rent remains relatively low by global standards, Tangier’s higher prices for groceries, restaurants, and general consumer goods pushed it to the top of the North African ranking. The city ranked 9th in Africa, with Abidjan, Ivory Coast, topping the list as Africa’s most expensive city.
