GRAND FORKS — Two Grand Forks debate team members are expected to miss a state high school debate play-in tournament on Saturday, Jan. 30, due to what co-coaches Shaina Hess and Tara Ulrich describe as an unfair interpretation of weather cancellation regulations. Due to cold weather and the debate team’s usual mode of transportation — a van provided by Grand Forks Public Schools — being denied by the district due to weather conditions, the team dropped out of two meets. On those weather days, other Grand Forks teams used diesel-fueled buses to travel to other locations for sporting events. ADVERTISEMENTUlrich believes Grand Forks Public Schools did what it could to inform the NDHSAA that the weather impacted the team’s travel. The Grand Forks coaches are hoping the NDHSAA will reconsider and approve just one weather waiver.
