Sussex Police failed to investigate properly before they decided to arrest custody sergeant Ben Websdale over misconduct allegations, his ex-wife said. Sgt Websdale was suffering from undiagnosed, work related mental trauma when colleagues from his own force arrested him at work. His ex-wife Michelle Websdale found him dead at his home on January 16, 2025, two days after he was served papers by police watchdog the IOPC. Speaking after the inquest, Michelle Websdale said: “Ben had a big heart and was always willing to go the extra mile to help others. They concluded there was a case to answer, and Sgt Websdale should have faced a police disciplinary hearing for gross misconduct.
