A $10 million gift from UPMC to Pittsburgh to purchase new ambulances will be “transformative” for the city and its residents, said Mayor Corey O’Connor. “This is really about transforming our city,” said O’Connor, standing in front of a 31-year-old rescue truck that he said had “well over” 100,000 miles on it. Besides helping the city get new ambulances, the donation would allow budgeted funds to be spent on 35 new public works trucks that can be used for snow plowing. Pittsburgh’s aging fleet of public works trucks and plows has been a problem this winter as many continue breaking down during peak use. In last week’s storm that dumped nearly a foot of snow on the city, 37 trucks broke down on just one overnight shift, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.
