Poultry Farm Shut Down for Illegal Land Use Change in Hoctún, Yucatán
['Yucatan Times']
The Yucatan Times
The Federal Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) temporarily closed a poultry farm located in the municipality of Hoctún after detecting unauthorized construction and activities on land originally designated for forestry use.
The action was taken following an inspection that confirmed the removal of vegetation and modification of the land to expand the farm’s facilities, as well as the preparation of new areas for future industrial buildings and an internal access road.
According to the environmental authority, the clearing covered approximately 8.9 hectares, where felled trees, accumulated logs, and branches were observed, in addition to land leveling work and the opening of roads within the property.
The federal agency determined that these activities constitute an unauthorized land use change and therefore proceeded to place closure seals to immediately halt any work on the site.
This intervention corresponds to the second time that Profepa has acted against the same poultry farm, after a previous closure carried out on another property related to the company, located in the municipality of Kinchil.
