San Rafael is moving ahead with plans to create a path that will connect a neighborhood to transit, shopping, schools and parks. The estimated $3.5 million project is planned as a 10-foot-wide multiuse path along the south side of the SMART train tracks. “SMART is encouraged to see cities like San Rafael advance projects that strengthen connections to SMART stations,” said Julia Gonzalez, spokesperson for the train service. After learning that the federal grant was canceled, San Rafael officials proposed that the Transportation Authority of Marin redistribute the entire $1.2 million to support preconstruction work. Over the next two years, city staff will focus on gaining environmental clearance and designing the path.
