February’s Black History Month events include a Vallejo Museum talk about a famed leader of Army Buffalo Soldier regiments whose ranks included dozens of men who moved here in the early 1900s and had active roles in our city’s Black community. Her great-grandfather, Medal of Honor recipient Edward Baker Jr., was an Army captain and Buffalo Soldier who fought in the 1898 Spanish-American War. Following the war, hundreds of Buffalo Soldiers were sent to the Presidio in San Francisco for discharge. Among those mentioned in early accounts of the Vallejo veterans’ group were James Owens, Brooks Johnston, Macon Russell, William Deadman, John Malone, Joseph Childress, E.U. That became a life’s mission for me.”When he met Waller, Blatcher was one of the founders of the Oakland-based Black Veterans Association.
