This didn’t happen on a large scale, and in 1976, Black History Week was renamed Black History Month and expanded to encompass the entire month of February. ASALH invites the community to celebrate the 100th birthday by supporting community events, such as visiting museums, archives, and libraries to explore exhibits on Black American history. A poet, also a classical pianist, is hosting a “Voices at the Table” poetry reading at his home to celebrate Black History Month. Reading books by Black authors, watching documentaries, and attending cultural celebrations are other ways suggested to commemorate this year’s Black History Month. Black History Month is as significant as the celebrations of other cultures in this country.
