Nearly half of all Kenyans are unhappy with the way the government grades students under the contentious Competency-Based Curriculum system. Coast region followed with 55 per cent dissatisfaction, while the Eastern region recorded 50 per cent, indicating strong regional unease with the grading approach. The survey revealed that dissatisfaction cuts almost evenly across gender lines, suggesting the grading concerns transcend demographic boundaries in the country. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has defended the system, explaining that the new grading identifies student strengths from Grade 10 onwards. Additionally, 19 per cent of respondents complained about a lack of adequate information and guidance on the system, which undermines public confidence in grading.
