PM Considering Tax Cuts for Newer VehiclesPrime Minister John Briceño says the government is considering reducing taxes on newer vehicles to make them more affordable for Belizeans and to discourage the importation of salvage cars. While outlining the need for safer, longer‑lasting vehicles on Belize’s roads, Briceño also addressed wider concerns about how cars are valued and taxed at Customs. “We need to be able to reduce the taxes on the newer vehicles that will be able to last longer in Belize,” Briceño said, noting that many neighbouring countries already ban salvage vehicles. Briceño added that the government’s goal is to protect consumers, reduce subjectivity at Customs, and ensure a transparent system that collects the proper revenue. “We want to be open, fair, transparent to everyone,” he said, adding that Cabinet will need to revisit vehicle tax rates to encourage safer, longer‑lasting vehicles on Belize’s roads.
