Despite being in the midst of a cold snap that has seen several days in a row with temperatures below freezing, Evanston’s five community centers that also serve as warming centers have not been full. Employees at the other four community centers agree that there has been a minimal number of residents coming in for warmth, although only Fleetwood-Jourdain has a designated warming center room, while the others operate their buildings as both a community center and warming center. They include the Robert Crown Community Center, the Evanston Ecology Center, the Levy Senior Center and the Prieto Community Center. The hospitality center’s overnight shelter accommodates guests over 18-years-old, provides breakfast in the morning and connects them with work opportunities. “Our overnight shelter has 30 beds and they are filled every night with a waiting list of more than 40 people,” Berube said.
