New UNC policy draft aims to cut free legal aid for students, modify student fees

The draft focuses on the disbursement of funds into six general areas: athletics, the association of student government, health services, student activities, educational and technology and campus security.
Student Legal Services serves roughly 3,000 students annually, with graduate students comprising over 40% of the nonprofit’s clients.
Eliminating fee funding for Student Legal Services would likely jeopardize the organization’s ability to provide representation, notary services and legal resources to students and student organizations.
“Student Government stands firmly opposed to this policy proposal and its impact on Student Legal Services and student organizations,” Carreno said.
Roughly $8.73 of undergraduate and graduate student fees go to Student Legal Services.
