Exit weakens surveillance systems and research cooperation on global health risks, warn expertsThe United States’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization threatens “decades of progress” in global health and weakens the cooperation vital for research into infectious diseases, experts have warned.
On 23 January, the US officially left the WHO, citing the organisation’s alleged “mishandling” of the Covid‑19 pandemic, including claims that it had obstructed the sharing of crucial information, shown bias towards certain countries and failed to reform.
The withdrawal removes one of the WHO’s largest funders.
