A temporary shutdown of the giant Tengiz oil field in Kazakhstan last week has shined a spotlight on the Opec-plus member's upstream sector, which sits at the intersection of multiple geopolitical and market storylines. Tengiz, one of the world's largest onshore oil fields, has driven Kazakhstan's crude output well above quota under the country's agreement with the Opec-plus alliance of producers. At the same time, unplanned outages at Tengiz and at the country's main oil-export pipeline, which terminates in Russia, have reduced Kazakhstan's overall production. Some production resumed this week, and Energy Minister Yerlan ‌Akkenzhenov said he hopes to see full output restored by next week. Tengiz accounted for roughly 40% of Kazakhstan's total oil and gas condensate production of over 2.07 million b/d in 2025, an increase of more than 13%, according to Energy Intelligence data.
