A Springfield pastor’s ties to the country’s largest African American Pentecostal religious denomination are both steeped in family history and new again. As the new prelate of the denomination’s Greater Massachusetts Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, Swan replaces his cousin, the late Bishop Bryant Robinson Jr., who died last February. It was in that role that Swan was consecrated, in November 2014, as a bishop with the denomination. Swan said it baffles him that some see social justice pursuits as antithetical to Christianity. “I’m just the guy here putting the wheels on it,” he said of the denomination’s social justice focus.
