GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- Genesee County has postponed decisions on whether to renew contracts for its 30 Flock Safety cameras amid concerns about the security of the data that’s collected. But the potential use of Flock data by the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement has led to privacy questions in Michigan and nationwide since last year. Citizens and some local officials have questioned whether camera data could violate the Fourth Amendment rights of citizens or be used by ICE. Shumaker said he may support Flock contract renewals, but not until he’s satisfied that the data collected here is secure. Monaca Elston, the county’s FOIA specialist, denied the request, saying the Flock camera data can be accessed by the Sheriff’s Office but that the county owns neither the camera system nor the data it records.
