GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids activists are planning to join a nationwide “shutdown” on Friday, Jan. 30, including a boycott of businesses and school walkouts, in protest of recent fatal shootings by federal agents in Minneapolis. Movimiento Cosecha GR, a Grand Rapids pro-immigration group, is organizing the protest locally and urging Grand Rapids residents to participate in a “day of no school, no work and no shopping.”Several Grand Rapids businesses have also committed to closing on Friday in support of the protests. Specifically in Grand Rapids, a local anti-ICE activist group is planning a boycott on businesses owned by Mayor David LaGrand to pressure him and the Grand Rapids City Commission to declare “sanctuary city” status and prevent Grand Rapids police from working with ICE.
