Somerset Levels villages brace themselves for the next 'catastrophic' flood
['Molly Kirk']
Somerset County Gazette | News
The Flooding on the Levels Action Group (FLAG) has been advocating for improved flood management over the past twelve years, with considerable progress made, particularly in terms of reducing flood risk.
Central to this progress has been the dredging initiative led by the Internal Drainage Board (IDB) and funded by the Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA).
An added complication is that pumps initially purchased exclusively for Somerset have been incorporated into the EA's national asset base.
This means Somerset now competes with other regions for these pumps, leading to a risky situation.
To rectify the ongoing issues with flood management, FLAG proposes greater authority for the IDB, urging that the agency should be entrusted with critical decisions around pump operation.
