Nevils’ narrative described waking up disoriented and in pain after what she later understood to be a forced sexual encounter with Lauer, a moment she originally struggled to name as assault. The memoir also sheds light on the personal aftermath of going public, including severe mental health struggles. Nevils said she spiraled into compulsive drinking, paranoia and depression after leaving NBC, and at one point was hospitalized in a psychiatric facility. Lauer, who denied the assault accusations when they first emerged, has maintained that his relationship with Nevils was consensual.
