Bosses at Shah Jalal, which was handed a zero-star hygiene rating by City Hall in September, have spent more than £20,000 refurbishing its store on Guardian Road. But Norwich City Council food and hygiene inspectors recently revisited the site and bumped the business up to a four-star rating after the major improvement. It was founded in 1993 by Jalal Uddin, who is 68 years old, and continues to be a family-run company. But in September 2025, Norwich City Council issued the business with the lowest hygiene rating after an inspection found "urgent improvement" was needed over the hygienic handling of food. Under the court orders, Shah Jalal's warehouse could not be used for any food business activities until the health risk condition was fully resolved and certified by the council, which has now been achieved.
