Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) have long-campaigned for redress for the way state pension changes were communicated when the 1995 Pensions Act and subsequent legislation raised the state pension age for women born on or after April 6 1950 from 60 to 65. In 2024 an ombudsman found thousands of women may have been affected by the Department for Work and Pensions' failure to adequately inform them that the state pension age had changed. In November 2025, work and pensions secretary Pat McFadden said his department would review the policy. He also told the Commons: “We accept that individual letters about changes to the state pension age could have been sent earlier. “For this, I want to repeat the apology that (former work and pensions secretary Liz Kendall) gave on behalf of the Government.
