Located at the top of George Street near the city's former maternity hospital, the St Enoch and Child mural was classified as one of the four most iconic artworks on Glasgow's Mural Trail. St Enoch and Child was painted by artist Sam Bates – otherwise known as Smug – who created it as a companion piece to the image of a modern day St Mungo on High Street. The gable-end artwork was to celebrate motherhood and the city's founding story by depicting St Enoch (also known as St Teneu) cradling her baby son, Kentigern, the future St Mungo, patron saint of Glasgow. However, there is hope the mural may be recommissioned, with the council understood to be exploring options for a possible new mural at this site going forward.
