San José State University (SJSU) allegedly violated Title IX by allowing a man in female-only facilities and on the women’s volleyball team, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced Wednesday. The school allegedly told coaching staff not to disclose the biological sex of the student to the female athletes on the team, according to the press release. The OCR alleged that female athletes shared facilities, such as hotel rooms and locker rooms, with the male student while being unaware of his biological sex. During one season, seven opposing all-women’s teams forfeited their competitions to protect their female athletes instead of having them face the male student, the press release asserted.
