Matthew Packard-Asai, 19, of Kapa‘a, disappeared on Wednesday, Jan. 28, after he was last seen fishing on the rocks near the northern point of Kahili Beach, the Coast Guard said in a news release. The Kaua‘i Fire Department stated that based on a preliminary report, first responders were notified of two fishermen being swept into the water on Wednesday after 12:15 p.m. local time. According to the Coast Guard, friends of Packard-Asai said they saw the surf sweep the 19-year-old away. In addition to the Coast Guard and the Kaua‘i Fire Department, the search for the young man has involved other agencies including the Kauai Police Department and Kauai Ocean Safety.
