Reverend Hus was wearing a sweatshirt adorned with the message “It doesn’t have to be this way.” This was exactly the message I carried with me all day. As a Christian, I consider myself a follower of The Way, the Way of Jesus. The contrast between our nation’s current immigration policies, this way, and the teachings of Jesus, the Way, could not be starker. He invites them to walk the Way of love, healing, compassion and justice and to let this Way catch the imagination of others. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
