Progress on power sector reforms came under review as the Standing Committee on Privatization was briefed on advanced metering projects and future plans for struggling distribution companies, the committee was chaired by Mr. Muhammad Farooq Sattar. As of January 9, 2026, more than 1.61 million AMI meters have been installed across the country, exceeding the original target of 1.5 million. Committee members appreciated the progress, noting that improved metering is critical for better billing, theft control, and overall service delivery in a sector burdened by inefficiencies for years. Government is exploring phased reforms, including management contracts or partial private sector participation, alongside financial restructuring and loss reduction measures. The committee stressed that any reform model must ensure consumer protection, regulatory oversight by NEPRA, and safeguards for employees.
