Talking rubbish: Exciting times for bin nerds
['Kirsty Weakley']
Local Government Chronicle (LGC)
For years I have eyed the green food waste caddies outside houses on neighbouring streets with envy because it’s been available for houses for a while but not flats.
Were those of us who lived in flats not trusted with the responsibility of food waste caddies?
Collecting food waste separately from general rubbish is a win/win.
If food waste is sent to landfill it emits greenhouse gases and contributes to climate change, whereas when it is collected separately it can be transformed into energy and fertiliser.
While it’s unlikely that many people will match my excitement at the arrival of a food waste caddy, it is incumbent on all of us to do our bit for the environment.
