Police officer Ron Gvili was one of 251 hostages seized and taken to the enclave by Palestinian Hamas militants during their October 7, 2023 cross-border attack that triggered the war. In a statement, the International Committee of the Red Cross said it had facilitated the return of 15 deceased Palestinians to the Gaza Strip after Israel recovered Gvili’s remains. The operation began in October with the release of 20 living hostages by Hamas and 1808 Palestinian prisoners by Israel, the ICRC said. Only 99 of the Palestinian bodies handed over since October have been identified, it added, with health officials forced to bury unidentified bodies in mass graves. Israel said four soldiers have been killed by Palestinian militants in the small coastal territory during the ceasefire.
