With Eliud Kipchoge’s major-marathon era coming to an end, a new generation of distance stars is ready to step into the spotlight, and the 2026 TCS London Marathon may be the stage where it happens. On Thursday, race organizers announced a stacked elite men’s field of 39 athletes, headlined by defending champion Sebastian Sawe of Kenya and reigning Olympic marathon champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia. Almost two years ago, the Ethiopian dominated the tough and humid Paris 2024 Olympic marathon, becoming the first Ethiopian man to win Olympic gold in the event since Sydney 2000. Since Kiptum’s world record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, no athlete has come close to breaking the two-hour barrier.
