A bicameral resolution offered this week by U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI) would designate Jan. 25-31 as National School Choice Week. “Children should have every opportunity to succeed in school, regardless of income or zip code,” Sen. Cassidy said. “This National School Choice Week, we celebrate giving parents the power to choose the best education option for their child.”Sen. Cassidy on Jan. 27 signed on as the lead original cosponsor of Senate Resolution 587, which has 33 other GOP original cosponsors and is sponsored by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC). Rep. Moolenaar on the same day sponsored the identical House Resolution 1023, which has 16 original cosponsors. “I am grateful for the support of my colleagues as we introduce this resolution to recognize parents’ rights in their children’s education.”According to the text of the resolution, it would encourage all parents, during National School Choice Week, to learn more about the education options available to them, and would encourage Americans to hold appropriate programs, events, and activities during National School Choice Week to raise public awareness of the benefits of opportunity in education.
