California Targets ICE-Funded Private Detention Centers With Proposed 50% Profit Tax

The proposed legislation would impose a tax on profits generated by private detention centers and redirect the revenue toward immigration and community services. The bill targets private, for-profit detention centers operating in California with funding from ICE. California has seven ICE-funded private detention centers. Inspections conducted by the California Department of Justice found health and safety violations at several facilities. Thurmond said, “That’s why I’m proud to be a co-sponsor of AB 1633, to impose a tax on private detention centers and hold these corporations accountable.
