Senate Democrats are calling for new restrictions on the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement surge.
The Senate rejected a preliminary vote to advance a spending package that includes funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
The Senate on Thursday voted 44-55 in a test vote to proceed with all of the remaining spending bills for the rest of fiscal 2026.
President Donald Trump told reporters at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday that “we’re getting close” to a deal with Senate Democrats to avoid a shutdown.
We don’t want a shutdown,” Trump said.
