MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Two officers involved in a deadly shooting in Springfield last summer will not be prosecuted after the attorney general found their use of force was justified. The shooting happened on August 21 at a home on Valley Street in Springfield. The AG’s office says both Windsor County Sheriff’s Deputy Bryan Jalava and Springfield Police Officer Vincent Franchi arrived at the home to arrest suspect Matthew Hewitt for assault, robbery, and kidnapping. The officers approached the car, and Crary didn’t listen to their commands to stop. In its investigation released Thursday, the AG’s office determined the officers’ “believed that they were in imminent danger of being killed or suffering great bodily harm and they were, therefore, justified in using deadly force.”
