The European Union (EU) said that Morocco’s Autonomy Plan is “one of the most feasible solutions” for the settlement of the Sahara issue, Morocco’s Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday. During the 15th session of the EU-Morocco Association Council held on Thursday in Brussels, Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas signed a joint statement to formalize the EU’s position, approved by 27 EU member states. The joint statement also notes the EU’s support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which fully backs the efforts of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and his Personal Envoy to the Sahara to facilitate negotiations under Morocco’s Autonomy Plan. Several EU member states, including France and Spain, have supported Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and its Autonomy Plan. The position builds on the international momentum promoted by Morocco’s King Mohammed VI and is reinforced by the UN Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025.
