Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough in the treatment of high blood pressure, PGIMER Chandigarh has successfully performed its first Renal Denervation (RDN) procedure. Given the patient’s young age and poor response to optimal medical therapy, the cardiology team decided to proceed with renal denervation, a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure that targets overactive nerves around the renal arteries—key contributors to resistant hypertension. Also known as the Symplicity™ Blood Pressure Procedure, renal denervation uses controlled radiofrequency energy to disrupt the nerve signals responsible for elevated blood pressure. The patient is currently stable and showing improved blood pressure control under continued medical supervision. Speaking on the achievement, Prof. Dr. Saurabh Mehrotra said that renal denervation offers new hope for patients whose blood pressure remains uncontrolled despite optimal medications, especially younger patients who are at high risk of long-term cardiovascular complications.
