‌The new restructure will close 44 branches across the nation, putting a staggering 291 jobs at risk if the bank follows through on its latest proposal. Santander said the closures will be accompanied by alternative forms of face-to-face support, including Community Bankers operating from Santander Locals or Banking Hubs. Santander Locals are typically based in community venues such as libraries or community centres and offer weekly, in-person banking and money management support. A spokesperson for Santander UK said the changes were necessary to ensure the bank can support customers “however they choose to bank with us”, while maintaining a balance between digital services and human interaction. ‌In a statement, they added: “In response to a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking, we are making changes to our branches to better support our customers.
