Waspi women will not receive compensation for state pension changes communicationThe Work and Pensions Secretary has apologised to the campaigners in the CommonsView Image WASPI women have campaigned for compensation for years (Image: Getty)Waspi women who have been campaigning for compensation from the government will receive none, the Work and Pensions Secretary has said. ‌Pat McFadden addressed the Commons today (Thursday), apologising that women born in the 1950s were not sent individual letters about their state pension changes earlier, but stating that they will not receive compensation as a result of communications problems. He also told the Commons: “We accept that individual letters about changes to the state pension age could have been sent earlier. We also agree with the (Parliamentary and Health Service) ombudsman that women did not suffer any direct financial loss from the delay.”‌Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) have long-campaigned for redress for the way state pension changes were communicated. ‌Responding to the announcement,, Angela Madden, chairwoman of Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi), said: “Ministers have demonstrated their utter contempt for 1950s-born women, for Parliament and for the Parliamentary Ombudsman.
