Only 230 of the 902 men aboard survived.The chaplains were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. A special “Four Chaplains Medal” was authorized in 1960 and awarded to their families in 1961. Feb. 3 is observed as Four Chaplains Day. The chaplains are remembered for their selfless service, which transcended religious boundaries, and for providing comfort and leadership in a time of terror.
