An Edwardsville man has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for making a false statement in application for a passport and aggravated identity theft, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors say Jose Arturo Perez Ramirez, 35, purchased the identity documents of an American citizen and obtained passport under that false identity in 2020. Perez Ramirez had previously been ordered removed from the U.S. in 2019, prosecutors said. U.S. District Judge Julia K. Munley imposed the sentence Wednesday. The U.S. Department of State investigated the case.
