PHOENIX – A man who checked in a suitcase containing drugs at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport last year was sentenced last week to five years in prison, authorities announced. Jason Kai, 39, previously pleaded guilty to a Class 2 felony of conspiracy to sell or transport a dangerous drug, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO). Authorities removed Kai from his flight to Detroit in April 2025 after fentanyl, methamphetamine and heroin were found in his checked bag, prosecutors said. “Countless lives have been saved thanks to the dedicated work of Sky Harbor International Airport’s TSA agents, Phoenix Police detectives and MCAO prosecutors,” County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a press release Thursday.
