On January 25, as much of the country reeled from footage of Border Patrol agents gunning down intensive care nurse Alex Pretti, President Donald Trump attempted to shift blame from the agents involved.
And Trump seemed to be leaning into speculation — circulated widely online in the shooting’s aftermath — that an accidental discharge from Pretti’s gun might have prompted officers to fire.
Neither the Department of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, nor Immigration and Customs Enforcement immediately responded to requests for comment.
The video appears to show another Border Patrol agent level his pistol at Pretti’s back moments before the first gunshot.
Greg Meyer, a former captain of the Los Angeles Police Department’s training academy and an expert in police shooting investigations, said it was too soon to conclude anything about the Pretti shooting, including whether or not Pretti’s gun had discharged.
