Role Funding:A new chapter in regional tourism governance is unfolding in Te Tauihu o Te Waka with the establishment of a Marlborough Destination Advisory Group – a body designed to ensure the voices of the visitor sector are heard clearly as the region’s tourism strategy evolves under council oversight. Its role is to grow, connect and champion a sustainable visitor economy, ensuring local operators can help shape decisions that affect the region’s visitor landscape. Crucially, the advisory group includes members from across the tourism industry – with three Marlborough tourism operators nominated by the local sector alongside four experienced council appointees. Regions like Marlborough, known for their spectacular landscapes, vineyards and Māori tourism experiences, are increasingly recognising the need for inclusive decision-making that reflects the voice of tangata whenua and cultural tourism businesses. As Marlborough prepares for a new phase in visitor management and strategy, voices from across the tourism sector – including Māori tourism leaders – will help shape how communities, culture and environment are woven into the region’s visitor story.
