“When a Witness Recants” opens with a simple, deliberate movement: writer Ta-Nehisi Coates walks from deep in the background into the foreground, takes a seat, and prepares to speak. The film’s most tense and destabilizing sequence is a confrontational meeting between the exonerated men and Bishop. The exonerated men tell Bishop he should have had more backbone, particularly once he became an adult capable of speaking up.
