A tidbit from The Daily Morning Astorian, Jan. 29, 1886:• Everyone remembers Charles B. Bishop’s “Widow Bedott,” as played here some time ago. It is the same Bishop in a better and newer play, “Strictly Business,” tomorrow evening. Note: Charles Burke Bishop (1833-1889) was a nationally famous “low” comedian (typified by slapstick antics and buffoonery). A thespian since childhood, he only left the stage to fight as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War, returning to acting when it was over. The next day, The New York Times ran an aptly titled memoriam, “Death Stops a Comedy.”
