The Ear forgot to mention Public Domain Day on Jan.1, when several images, films, books, etc., went into the public domain. This year public domain includes works by several renowned authors, including William Faulkner, Agatha Christie, T.S. Eliot, Sigmund Freud and Franz Kafka, according to The Public Domain Review, which also includes links to read several of the works online. On a less heady level, Collider noted that several movies from 1930 have joined the public domain list, including “The Big Trail,” John Wayne‘s first movie, “King of Jazz” and Greta Garbo‘s first speaking role in “Anna Christie.”And last, but surely not least, to enter the public realm: “The Little Engine that Could,” by Wally Piper.
