There’s a fair bit of India-specific data to dig into in music data analytics firm Chartmetric’s Year In Music report for 2025. The most encouraging of the stats is that India contributed to 11% of Chartmetric’s top 1,000 artists in 2025, a substantial rise from just 0.6% in 2020. Curiously, the top ten includes popular YouTuber Carryminati who hasn’t put out any new music since 2023, and actor Shreyas Talpade who is not a recording artist. And while it’s not quite a genre, “Indian” music accounted for 2% of the genres that “represented 2025’s new artists and tracks” from the overall total of 13 million artists and 145m releases Chartmetric analysed last year. Surprisingly, despite India having the largest audience for YouTube—which might explain the presence of CarryMinati among the country’s top stars—no artists from the country are in the top ten of the acts that garnered the most subscribers on the platform.
