A truck driver has said that a mechanical failure on the vehicle caused the major Thursday morning accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge. Speaking with reporters at the scene, the driver explained that the truck began experiencing gearbox issues. The situation worsened as the brakes seemingly failed, causing the vehicle to roll backward, onto incoming traffic. He recalled that the steering also became “stiff, stiff” and despite his efforts, he was unable to avoid colliding with other vehicles. Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh later confirmed reports of the accident, which resulted in several injuries and damage to multiple vehicles.
