Last week, over 1,200 students, alumni and organizations from GW Law and Georgetown University Law Center signed a petition urging the universities to block U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from participating in their annual public interest career fair. ICE voluntarily withdrew ahead of Friday’s fair due to mounting pressure from students, but the law school officials had refused to disinvite the agency. Notably, GW Law Dean Dayna Bowen Matthew cited free expression, University policy and accreditation rules as reasons GW would not ask them to pull out. As a GW student, I find the University’s refusal to take a stand against ICE at this moment abhorrent — it contradicts nearly all of the school’s stated values. To do so would not only abandon the morals and ethics the institution should and claims to uphold, but would also alienate thousands of GW students who come from immigrant backgrounds.
