The Institute for Building Technology and Safety hosted the Sembrando Oportunidades: Regional Economic Development Forum in Fajardo as part of an effort to strengthen economic development in Puerto Rico’s eastern region through collaboration, data-driven planning and support for local businesses. The initiative is supported by a grant awarded to IBTS through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Program, which funds regional planning, intersectoral collaboration and local development efforts in rural communities. IBTS said its work includes assisting communities and grassroots organizations in developing skills that support entrepreneurship, including strategic planning, business plan development and networking. The organization also works with municipalities to promote ordinances and public policies intended to facilitate entrepreneurship and address local economic conditions, particularly in Ceiba, Naguabo and Fajardo. “At IBTS, we believe sustainable economic development begins when people are connected to useful information, practical tools and real support networks,” said Agnes Crespo, executive director of IBTS Puerto Rico.
